During the reconstruction of the football field in Vienna, builders came across a mass grave of Roman soldiers, which formed about 2000 years ago.
This is reported The Guardian and Associated Press.
Archaeologists explored a place under the football field and found at least 129 people there. The total number of dead in the grave is expected to exceed 150. Therefore, researchers call discovery unprecedented for Central Europe.
« There were almost no such finds in Roman history. In Germany, for example, they found many weapons in the field of ancient battles, but so that the bodies of warriors are preserved is an extraordinary rarity »– explained the head of excavation Mikael Binder.
Scientists believe that these are the remains of Roman soldiers who died in the battle with Germanic tribes. According to the researchers, in this place in the first century AD was a « catastrophic military event ». The remains of fighters are considered to be evidence of the first known fights in the region.
The remains of Roman warriors almost two thousand years ago were placed in one pit – this is different from the usual practice of burial at that time. By the III century, soldiers in the Roman Empire were chained.
The mass grave shows that the corpses at this place were dumped hastily and unorganized. This is also confirmed by signs of damage to the bodies, in particular on parts of the head, torso and pelvis.
All the dead were identified as men mainly between the ages of 20 and 30. Scientists say that the dead in general had signs of good health, but have received various combat injuries.
« They have various combat wounds, including executions. It is indeed a battlefield. There are wounds from swords, spears, as well as traces of blunt injuries »,-added the chairman of the Vienna City Archeological Department of Christina Adler-Welfl.
Carbon analysis showed that the people whose remains were found in the grave died between the 80 and 130 years of our era. The same period dates back to artifacts next to bodies – weapons, armor and nails used in Roman military shoes.
Scientists plan to analyze the DNA of the dead to learn more about the Roman military.
« The most probable theory-burial related to the Danube campaigns of Emperor Domitian-is 86-96 years of our era »,-said Kristina Adler-Welfl.
Archaeologists say that the discovery also reveals the signs of settlement, which later became the modern capital of Austria.
Earlier in Israel a three -year -old girl found Sea of ancient Egypt. The artifact of about 3800 years depicts Scaboma – a symbol of a new life.
