First there was the cell cabinet at the doctor, then the HPV test came for home use, and now there is a prospect that women in the future can only pee in a cup to be screened for cervical cancer.
It is Mette Tranberg, senior researcher at the University Clinic for Cancer Screening under the Department of People’s Survey at the Regional Hospital Randers and Associate Professor at Aarhus University, who has developed a new urine test as a simplified screening method.

The hope is that a urine test will make it easier and less cross -border for women to be screened for cervical cancer and that more women will thus participate in the screening programs.

Half of cases arise among the 25 percent of women who do not participate in the national screening program.
« That was the problem I wanted to solve, because we know that a large part of the women who are not being screened are difficult to achieve. For some, it is about the gynecological study being experienced as unpleasant or cross -border, » says Mette Tranberg.
The urine samples are sent for analysis in the laboratory unit at the Regional Hospital Randers. So it does not work as a pregnancy test where you get answers right away.
Simple sample with great potential
In the research project, which is supported by the Danish Free Research Fund and the Danish Cancer Society, Mette Tranberg and her colleagues have shown that a urine test is comparable to cell scrap by the doctor when it comes to discovering HPV – the virus that can lead to cervical cancer and its suburbs.
The test is validated and technically clear. The next step is a larger controlled trial among women who do not participate in the current screening offer.
« We do not yet know if they will use the urine test, and we need to find out before you can introduce it broadly. But I hope it can help break a long -time barrier, » says Mette Tranberg.
Cervical cancer is expected to be eradicated within the next 15 years due to both a well -functioning child vaccination program for HPV and a well -functioning screening program in Denmark, which is still under development to get as much as possible.
