Immigration no longer an equally hot question for voters

In connection with the refugee crisis in 2015, immigration rose to the top of the political agenda. From having been completely in the cloud of such things as healthcare and school, voters placed immigration and integration as number one in DN/Ipso’s survey in January 2016. At that time, 163,000 people had applied for asylum in Sweden in one year.

It caused several parties to swing and begin to recommend a more restrictive policy. A line that the Swedish Democrats had long run.

Immigration continued Lying high for several years but from 2019, voters’ interest began to slowly but surely cool down. In a new measurement from DN/Ipsos, only about every seventh voters think that immigration and integration are among the most important social problems.

It is also a decrease compared to the last measurement in November. Thus, the question is in place five.

Nicklas Källebring, opinion analyst at Ipsos, sees several reasons for the shift in public opinion.

– The fact that the time parties signal power and that the issue is now being handled politically in many different ways can contribute to reducing the importance to the voters. The number of people who immigrate to Sweden has also decreased sharply, he says.

Migration is a supporting part In the Tidö agreement and since the election 2022, there has been a fierce stream of investigations and proposals for everything from return to stricter requirements for citizenship.

But Nicklas Källebring believes that the discussion about immigration has also changed character. The focus has shifted to the serious gang crime. These problems are not least described by the time parties as a result of excessive immigration.

Therefore, it is not surprising, says Nicklas Källebring, that the crime has taken over the first place on the voters’ list. More than one in four believe this is the most important issue, which is unchanged compared to November.

Politics has lately Much was characterized by the Ukraine war and the renovation as well as President Trump’s customs and trade war. However, it has not made a strong impression in voters’ priorities. The two areas Sweden’s economy and defense/security share sixth place. Fewer than one in ten believe that this has the highest priority.

The health care is ranked second by the voters. In shared third place, school and education as well as the environment and climate end up.
