Along the Vijfstraat in Pittem, no fewer than three drivers ignored a closed level crossing on Monday. This can be seen on a video that circulates on social media. « Two crossings further there was a technical malfunction, but then it is life -threatening and forbidden, » said Frédéric Petit of Infrabel.
On social media, a video appeared on Tuesday showing how three drivers slalom along the closed barriers on a level crossing. In the meantime, the light also blinks red. At Infrabel they were informed of the video on Monday. « Initially we thought the incident occurred on Stationsstraat in Pittem. There was a malfunction there yesterday afternoon. But in the end it turned out to be the level crossing on the Vijfstraat, which is a little further, » said Frédéric Petit, spokesperson for Infrabel.
Traffic rules not respected
In the event of a technical malfunction, a certain safety procedure is followed. The barriers then go down and trains can still pass by walking at 5 km per hour. « But that only on the level crossing where there is a malfunction. Maybe the level crossing on the Vijfstraat remained a little longer than normal. »
At Infrabel they condemn the action of the three drivers. « The rules are actually simple. If the barrier is down and the light is on red one should not cross, not even in these circumstances. The drivers involved have not respected the traffic rules. What they have now done is life -threatening and forbidden.
