Illegal slaughter of sheep during Sacrifice Festival in Ninove stopped by Police (Ninove)

The police determined how a few sheep were ready to be slaughtered unanimously. The police intervention was late for one sheep, but four other sheep were saved.

According to Belgian legislation, slaughter without prior anesthesia is prohibited, except under strict conditions and in recognized slaughterhouses. In this case there was no question of these conditions, according to acting mayor Ilse Malfoot (Forza Ninove). The police intervened and seized the sheep.

Ilse Malfroot responds with horror. « This is a serious violation of our animal welfare legislation and the rules on food safety, » she says. « I am relieved that our police have quickly intervened and could prevent worse. Illegal slaughter not only entails animal suffering, but also pose a risk to public health. »

The city council strictly rejects the practices. « We will do everything we can to detect these kinds of situations and tackle it strictly, » says Malfroot. « The public prosecutor’s office has been informed and further investigates the case. It is examined which prosecution is possible against those involved. »(BSB)
