Idol Pommelien Thijs is engaging and jumpy on King’s Night in Amsterdam

The Flemish Pommelien Thijs expresses herself in several disciplines: she is known as an actress in Flemish TV series, she makes her own sustainable clothing, and is popular as a singer. The style of her songs falls under uplifting pop music, but in terms of content she is versatile.

Pommelien Thijs (24, Kessel) has grown into a star in recent years thanks to hits such as ‘Atlas’ and ‘Now that we are no longer talking’ who first announced her in Belgium and quickly in the Netherlands. That she is an idol for many, turned out to be in a sold -out Paradiso, Amsterdam, where she performed on King’s Night. The audience sang the lyrics and was attentive from the moment Thijs and her five band members came on stage.

A wind machine blew her blonde hair through the war, three musicians each stood on their own raised cube, next to Thijs two dynamic guitarists played. This created a lively image, awarded by the greatest drum set that has recently stood in Paradiso.

Thijs is engaging, jumpy and full of dedication. The mood was heated within a few songs, both in the room and on stage. Soon singer Meau appeared to sing two songs together: Meau’s subdued ‘you did’, with the second voice of Thijs, and their joint ‘Dream the dark way’ in which the energetic (Thijs) and melancholic singing voice (Meau) alternated each other nicely.

Already at the beginning she played the new single ‘present tense’. In this text, Thijs breaks through the usual personal themes with critical observations about the current time. Without calling him by name, she refers to Elon Musk (« they fly in rockets to heaven ») and « The little man pays herself/ a little things for the one percent that remains. » And she is concerned about ‘the youth of today’, because ‘he knows nothing about politics’.

Thijs is more original in her words. For example, in the supercooled remark in ‘On or under it’: ‘I read it this week on the internet ..’ – It was enthusiastically sung in Paradiso. ‘Kleine Tornado’ is a tender argument about her own childhood as a ‘busy’ girl, and funny enough was one of her few calm songs.

Thijs has many possibilities, it turns out, yet she chooses a well -known sound musically. The songs from the album ‘by accident’ and her singles, are excited outbursts, vital sung with sometimes a voice. For example, the frame is less adventurous than its texts. Guitar and drum have an average sound and the structure of the songs are coming, by how the drums raid and the breaks are timed.

In Paradiso the performances were spicier, almost every song was supported: ‘silver’, ‘girls of honey’, ‘authentic’. The text of ‘What an idea’ is inventive again. ‘I love the idea of you’ was completely tied here by the youngest fans in the hall, around eight years old.
