US President Donald Trump has made a statement of humorous notes about Pope Francis’s successor, who passed away last week at the age of 88.
During a press conference at the White House, Trump was asked if there was a favorite name for the next leadership of the Holy See. Although he did not comment on any particular cardinal, he praised American figures in the race and added ironically:
“I would like to be me Pope. That would be my number one choice”Trump said.
Despite the ironic tone, Trump showed some interest in developments in the Vatican, respecting Cardinal Timothy Dolan from New York, although he is not considered a potential candidate for the papal throne. Another US name rumored is Cardinal Joseph Tobin from Newark, but to date, no American has been elected Pope.
Trump, along with his wife Melania, attended the Vatican’s funeral.
The attention is now focused on the conclusions that meets on May 7, where 135 voting rights will choose the new Pope in a closed -door process in the Sistine hat – one of the most crucial moments for the future of the Catholic Church.
