The majority with which Sepp Schellhorn was elected as the new head of state of Neos Salzburg on Saturday was very scarce. How he interprets the result and why he doesn’t want to become a top candidate, he told the « press » on the way back to Vienna.

On Saturday, State Secretary Sepp Schellhorn (NEOS) faced the chairman of his state party in Salzburg for the third time. With 52 percent and 37 votes, the race in the end was extremely tight in favor of Schellhorn, which had briefly withdrawn from the state and federal party in 2021. The opposite candidate Ignacio Patt, 26-year-old student and former Salzburg Junos top candidate, came up with 32 votes. In an interview with the « press », Schellhorn emphasizes, as before the general meeting, that in 2028 he did not want to move into the state election as a top candidate.

Sepp Schellhorn: I have no problem with it at all. That just makes Neos. Around 100 to 120 members have made it available to choose here. There is no alibi candidate with us. The SPÖ Salzburg has not yet found a candidate, and the ÖVP has once brought together 100 percent for the Chancellor.

FPÖ general secretary Michael Schledlitz called her result embarrassed in a broadcast. They are the « most unpopular state politician in history » and the « personalized vote of no confidence ». What do you say?

Mr. Schledlitz has his opinion. If he believes from Vienna to know how things are going in Salzburg, then he can at Marlene Svazek (FPÖ state party leader, note) ask.

« It was a wake-up call, you have to be so honest, » commented a Neos spokesman. The “complete confirmation” is to get yourself in the next few years. How do you want to do that?

The fact is, we don’t sit in the state parliament. The fact is that we are out of parliamentary opposition, and the fact is that you have to build the structures in the country for a urban party. And I want to help.
