HZZO has made a new decision: ‘This is shameful. Make children pay for their lives and health ‘
They have an insulin life, and thus the insulin pump they need 24 hours a day. This decision of the Croatian Health Insurance Institute is shameful, Manja Prasek, president of the Zagreb Diabetic Society, told us.
Recall that by the decision of the Assistant Commission, the surcharge for medically indicated insulin pumps for children with diabetes is denied. This decision has caused numerous reactions of parents and Croatian experts. Everyone agreed in one, which is that the decision should be canceled.
The pumps are expensive, and with this decision, as expert Davor Skeledji explained to us, everything is covered. There are two types that diabetics use – without IS Cateter. The monthly extra charge for pumps without catheter is 76 euros, while for those with the catheter it is 1300 euros. Diabetics catheter pumps can use four years without changing, while these without a catheter must change every month.
– This is extremely difficult for parents whose children are diabetics. It’s wrong. These are enormous amounts that not everyone can finance. The disease can affect everyone, they did not choose it – the mother of diabetics told us.
– Not everyone gets the right to the insulin pump. The doctor decides. They should be free because it is the best treatment. The decision, as they told us from the CIHI, is like that because the manufacturer did not lower the price. They must understand that insulin saves their lives and that this is not fair to children. Receiving insulin is not something they can choose to receive, they are constantly needed because it saves their lives. Pumps for children up to 18 should be free of charge, when they grow up can decide if there is any form of treatment that later suits them – said Prašek, explaining that today’s advanced pumps at all times regulate insulin in the blood.
– We want to emphasize that the discrimination of children of weaker property status needs to be abolished. We consider ignoring this with a serious mistake – said the Croatian Association of Diabetic Associations.
They add that children using these pumps have a more chance of normal development, a lower incidence of hospitalizations and a lower risk of long -term health problems.
– We do not ask for advanced insulin pumps to be moved from the supplementary list of aids. In accordance with the attitude of the Ombudsman and the Expert Society, we ask that all pumps remain on the supplementary list as before, but only for adults, and to add a new record to the elementary list with identical indications, but without extra charge for children under 18, which is in accordance with the views presented and the Ombudsman – they emphasized.
