Hunting fuel reports case of Hasenpest in Luxembourg

As the Fédération Saint-Hubert of the Chaseurs du Grand-Duché de Luxembourg announced in a post on Facebook on Friday, the so-called HasenPest-Medical Medical as Tularemia-has apparently arrived in Luxembourg.

An infected hare was found in the Junglinster area. According to a user commentary on Facebook, the animal was discovered on March 24, but weakened near the cycle path between Junglinster and Gonderingen and brought to a gathering station planned. On April 3, the veterinary office confirmed that the animal did not survive the infection.

The hunting federation calls the population to report the dead or sick rabbits and never touch them with their bare hands. When handling gloves and a mask, it is recommended. Kadaver is to be brought to the laboratory in Dudelingen in a closed plastic bag – after prior call under number 24782544.

The Fédération continues to regularly treat pets against parasites and to keep dogs on a leash, especially during the current young game.

What is Tularemia?

Tularemia – also known as the rabbit plague – is a highly contagious bacterial infectious disease, which primarily affects wild animals such as rabbits, squirrels, mice and rats.

People can also infect themselves, mostly through contact with infected animals, tick bites or contaminated water. The incubation period is between one and ten days.

The first symptoms resemble flu: fever, chills, headache and swollen lymph nodes. Without treatment with antibiotics, the disease is difficult.
