Hungary against the EU, adopts the law that officially recognizes only female and male genders

The Hungarian Parliament has adopted a constitutional amendment that recognizes only two genders, male and female. The mass runs counter to a wider EU policy on LGBTQ rights.
The amendment of the Basic Law, proposed by the Fidesz-KDNP ruling coalition, was adopted on Monday with 140 votes in favor and 21 against, with no abstention.
According to changes, the Constitution now states that Hungary will protect the institution of marriage as « voluntary union of a man and a woman » and the family as the basis of the nation’s survival. Family ties should be based on marriage or relationships between parents and children. « The mother will be a woman, the father will be a man, » the text said.
The amendment also codifies the prohibition of public events LGBTQ+ and states that the rights of children to moral, physical and spiritual development replace any other fundamental right other than the right to life.
In 2020, Hungary abolished legal recognition of transgender persons and in 2021 changed its laws on protection of children to stop promoting LGBTQ topics in the media, advertising and educational materials accessible to juveniles. The measures caused a fierce reaction in Brussels, with the European Commission launched legal action against Budapest, referring to the European Court of Justice and freezing billions of EU funds over alleged violations of fundamental rights.
