On June 2, 2023, Saraiaho, at the age of seventy, died after a serious illness, she was at the height of fame and was celebrated as a composer whose modernism had given both a human and a legitimate face. In the contemporary music world, she has always been distinguished by her fine, unique voice. Gull Sariaho has mastered the composition in Helsinki, Freiburg and Paris. From 1982 until her death, she lived in the French capital. Studies and studies at the Paris Electro Aacoustic Experiments Center IRCAM have a major influence on her music. Saraiaho's characteristic luxurious and mysterious sound textures were often created by combining acoustic and electronic tools.

In four days in Amsterdam you will be able to get to know the author's work in all its expanses: from the early spectral works of Saraiaho to her life's last opus – a concert for trumpet and orchestra Hush (The premiere was shortly after the composer's death). An additional program, which includes conversations and discussions with Gull Sariaho's creative partners, lectures, master classes, film screenings and exhibition, will give you a comprehensive insight into her life and art. Festival curators are contemporary music ensemble Asko | Schönberg and gull Sariaho score publishing house Chester Music.

The first and last work of the composer will be performed at the opening concert of the festival on March 13 – a concert for violin and orchestra Graal Théâtre (1994) composed of violinist Gidon Kremer and the aforementioned concert for the trumpet and orchestra Hush (2023) written by the Finnish jazz trumpeter Werner for Pohjol. These works are interconnected – Hush have Graal Théâtre Continuation (trumpet solo plays a big role in the concert Graal Théâtreand the author develops this topic in the composition Hush).

On March 15, composer chamber music will be interpreted by the Belgian ensemble Het collecttief And the Belgian soprano Liesbeta Devosa, while the Saraiaho chorus of Saraho will be manifested by the Helsinki Chamber Choir, led by conductor Nils Schwekendik. At the end of the day, two unique talents and Sariaho friends will go on a joint improvisation adventure Sons of Chipotle – It combines composer trusted companion Finnish cellist Ansi Kartunen and British rock bands LED Zeppelin Participant multi -instrumentalist John Paul Jones.

Master Class Festival will be presented by Ansi Kartunen, Quartet Meta4Werner Pohjola, as well as director Peter Selars, who has created the productions of gull Sariaho's musically dramatic work.
