A major accident happened on the Antwerpsesteenweg in Hoboken on Saturday morning. A driver rammed a dozen cars, drove a tree out of the ground and damaged a house in the street. The car finally ended against a lighting pole. The driver was arrested, he took a negative alcohol and saliva test.
The accident happened around 6.50 am. The police arrived immediately. « According to the first findings of our teams on the spot, an accident in the Antwerpsesteenweg in Hoboken caused an enormous amount of material damage, » says spokesperson Kim Bastiaens of the Antwerp police. « For example, a dozen cars, a home and a container are badly damaged, but a tree was also pulled out and different lighting posts hit. »
The car that caused the accident came to a halt against a pole in the street. Two ambulances and two MUG teams rushed on the spot, but the two passengers of the car were only slightly injured by miracle. « The driver of the car has been arrested. He took a negative breathing and drug test, » says Bastiaens.
Presumably excessive speed is due to the cause of the accident, but the police cannot make any statements about that yet. « That must be apparent from the further investigation. » The police have closed the Antwerpsesteenweg locally to make all findings. All cars involved must be towed and the damage must also be cleared. The police therefore expect nuisance for traffic in the area all day.
