How to repair Syria – Liberation

Almost five months after the fall of Bashar al-Assad, Syria is still trying to overcome fourteen years of civil war and five decades of carelessness and corruption of a dictatorial regime ready to do anything, until massacring its own people, to keep power. And it’s not easy. The new strong man in the country, the Salafist Ahmed al-Charaa, had to show that he had really broken with the jihadist groups from which he came. Changing look and even names. To be accepted from Westerners and thus obtain the lifting of their sanctions, he had to show himself a minimum « inclusive » in the composition of his governmentincluding in particular a Christian, democrat and feminist woman as well as various Kurdish or Alaouite representatives. Will this be enough to maintain the unity of the country? Nothing is certain. Relatives of the president retain the essential positions, and especially the Alaouite community, from which the Assad family came, fears new desires of revenge since The massacre of which it was the subject in March in the region of Homs by groups of men claiming new authorities. Protected for decades by the family in power, the Alawites are dangerously exposed to the desires of reprisals and it will take time before seeing the hatred aroused by their past with Assad falls back. Especially if new killings feed the cycle of violence. If it wants to give this ruined, looted, destroyed country, divided a chance to get up and rebuilt, the international community has every interest in helping Syrians to make a common horizon and a goal. First steps have been made but they are not sufficient. Taken in vice between the Israelis, to the south, who take advantage of the situation to snack on the territory, and the Turks to the north who intend to be rewarded for the help provided during it, Ahmed al-Charaa is not entitled to error.
