How to defy the heavy rain – diepresse.com
There is no patent solution for climate adjustment – every city has to find its way, tailored to local challenges. A look at Copenhagen, Hamburg and Vienna.
Climate change is progressing faster than previously assumed, constantly updated climate forecasts draw a dark picture that is confirmed in reality. 2023 was the warmest year since the measurement history began. In Austria, in addition to the heat, we remember the violent heavy rain events and floods. Climate change causes billions of damage every year, and more people now die of extreme heat than in road traffic. Cities in particular are vulnerable, many people live in a confined space, and structural structures reinforce climatic effects.
One of the most effective climate adaptation strategies is the expansion of green infrastructure – a network of natural and designed green areas that perform ecological, social and climatic functions. However, this is a major challenge to integrate this into existing city structure. Long -term strategies, a clear political will and targeted investments are necessary. The level of development of green infrastructure varies in European cities. In order to exchange knowledge and experiences, the Austrian Society for Landscape Architecture (ÖGLA) recently invited to the international symposium under the title « Designing Green and Resilient Cities » on the site of the former northwest station in Vienna, one of the latest development areas in the city.

Basically, all cities are faced with similar challenges: concepts that are missing too slow implementation processes, lack of concepts integrated in adaptation strategies and high costs, which mostly have to be covered by under -financed budgets. « An intensive, interdisciplinary dialogue in the field of landscape architecture helps to promote synergies and minimize negative effects, » explains ÖGLA President Anna Detzlhofer. This means that test phases can be shortened and time can be saved. International comparisons also help to better classify and improve progress.
Cities such as Paris, Copenhagen and Hamburg have sent representatives to Vienna in order to present urban planning strategies and lighthouse projects at the symposium. Experts from planning, science and research presented innovative tools to green existing cities in high quality and quickly.

« The requirements for planning strategies are complex. There is consensus that climate adaptation must start at all levels of urban planning – from large -scale master plans to selective interventions, » says Detzlhofer. « Currently, the discipline is working intensively on the further development of urban planning instruments. » City climate analyzes, for example, show weaknesses and identify sub -supplied areas. They are important as a planning basis, but further instruments are needed at the building site level.
