How the father-son relationship shapes life-Diepresse.com

It can be complicated, not available, inspiring or beautiful – but it is always formative. We look at the relationship with the father on Father’s Day. And let Erwin Steinhauer, Christian Stocker, Paul Pizzera, Hosea Ratschiller, Thomas Brezina and Andreas Herzog look back on it.

« I would have been happy to have you as a friend, as a boss, as an uncle, as a grandfather, as a grandfather, even as a father -in -law. Only as a father you were too strong for me, » writes Franz Kafka in his « letter to the father ». Arno Geiger writes about how he takes care of his dementia -patient father and establishes a new, deeper connection to him. Barack Obama, in turn, describes the search for his father and thus for his own identity in his books.

You don’t have to process your childhood literarily to know: the paternal figure shapes all of us. For many, the father is the first and the most important male caregiver. Some strive to become like him, others do everything they can to differentiate themselves. Some find him again after alienation in old age – others never get to know their father properly.
