How India and Pakistan reacted after the attack on tourists in Kashmir

India has launched attacks on alleged fighter camps in Pakistan on Wednesday in response to the murder of 26 people, mainly tourists in the Indian cashmere last month. Pakistan said his response to India’s missile strike was underway.

Here is a look at the response measures that the two sides declared after the violence:

What happened

Armed men opened fire in the Baisaran Valley, a popular tourist attraction in the Kahmir region in Kashmir, afternoon on April 22, killing 26 people and injuring several others before fleeing the surrounding pine forests.

Why India claims that Pakistan is involved

The two sides claim to the entire territory of Kashmir, but they partially manage it. India has long accused Pakistan of helping Islamist separatists who have fought with security forces in its part of the territory – the accusations that Islamabad denies.

India will invade Pakistan, the Minister of Defense in Islamabad said

India claims to have identified the three attackers, including two Pakistani citizens, as « terrorists » who lead a violent rebellion against Indian government in Kashmir, where a Muslim majority lives.

How does Pakistan react

Pakistan denies all participation, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called for a transparent, credible and neutral investigation into the attack. He also called on the United States to persuade India to « reassure rhetoric and to act responsibly. »

The head of the Pakistan-administered Kashmir region called for international mediation and stated that his administration was preparing a humanitarian response in case of further escalation.

What did both sides do

  • India and Pakistan closed their airspace for the other side airlines.
  • Both sides closed the only open land border they shared and stopped special South Asian visas that allowed people to travel between them.
  • They declared each other their defense advisers in the missions in New Delhi and Islamabad for persona non grata and reduced the numbers of their embassies.
  • India has stopped a key contract that regulated the sharing of water from the Indus River and its tributaries. Pakistan warned that any attempt to stop or divert water would be considered an act of war and would be met with « full force ».
  • Pakistan stopped all bilateral agreements and interrupted any trade with India, including to and from any third country.
