How dangerous is an earthquake of 6.3 degrees (video)


An earthquake with magnitude 6.3 degrees took place on Friday in the province of Esmeraldas, northwest of Ecuador. At least 20 people were injured and over 100 destroyed homes, according to a balance sheet published by the authorities, reports AFP and Reuters.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 35 kilometers, around 06:45 (11:45 GMT), according to the US Geophysics Institute (USGS).

The earthquake, registered 8.4 km from the city of Esmeraldas, the capital of the coastal province of the same name, near the border with Colombia, felt in 10 of the 24 provinces of the South American country. Electricity and telecommunications networks, as well as a bridge and roads have been affected, local authorities announced.
Recently Reales Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa announced on the X platform the establishment of shelters and the distribution of humanitarian help kits.
The National Petroecuador Petroleum Company suspended its operations for the refinery in Esmeraldas, which produces over 100,000 barrels per day. « Damages were found in its units, » the company said in a statement.

The Ecuador is on marine tectonic plates, which constantly generates earthquakes.
Friday’s earthquake is « a consequence of the Nazca plate subduction process, » explained Pablo Palacios, a technician at the Institute of Geophysics.
In 2016, an earthquake with magnitude 7.8 that hit the coastal areas of Manabi and Esmeraldas made 673 dead and about 6,300 injured.
