Hospitals in Luxembourg defy hacker attacks – still
« Luxembourg is well positioned against cyber attacks, » said Gérard Schockmel (DP), President of the Commission for Higher Education, Research and Digitization, the « Luxemburger Word » after a meeting on cybersecurity on Tuesday.
The development of cyber attacks on the critical infrastructure in Luxembourg was discussed on Tuesday in the Committee on University, Research and Digitization. Critical infrastructures include hospitals and water and energy supply.
Cyber attacks are increasing to worry.
Gusty Graas
DP Chamber MP
The commission meeting on Tuesday was excluded from the public behind closed doors. In Luxembourg there are also « eyes and ears of states that are not good for Luxembourg », Schockmel explained the decision.
Luxembourg practice for an emergency
However, Schockmel was calm about the decisions and discussions in the Commission. The recent cyber attacks on Luxembourg are a good example of the Grand Duchy of Cyber attacks, according to the DP MP. The attacks had led to partial interruptions. « The administrations were able to work normally, » said Schockmel.
Cyber security in hospitals
« Cyber attacks are increasing to worry, » wrote MP Gusty Graas (DP) in a parliamentary request on the subject of cyber security and cyber attacks.
In his request, Graas underlines how susceptible the health sector, and in particular the hospitals, are for attacks from the Internet. According to a report by the European Agency for Cyber Security (Enisa), attacks on the healthcare system make up 53 percent of all reported incidents. Of these, 42 percent are attacks on hospitals.
Martine Deprez (CSV), Minister of Health and Social Security, said that despite the numerous attempted attack attempts, « the existing security and monitoring precautions can limit the effects on the company ». In other words: So far, the infrastructure withstands hacker attacks.
Cyber attack has paralyzed websites of the state
In order to ensure a high degree of cyber security, the personnel, technical and organizational funds must be constantly updated, said Minister Deprez.
