Hose to prepare. Firefighters supervised the acquaintance of bears eared at the Ostrava Zoo
The older of the males lives there for a long time, the younger bear called Jirka arrived in the zoo end of last year from Konopiště Castle. Firefighters were summoned in case the bears attacked each other. In this case, they would separate them from each other.
“The theme of our exercise was the first interaction between the two males that could result in a territorial conflict. One of the variants of the safe end of the possible conflict was the use of water currents, ”said Kamila Langerová, a spokesman for firefighters from the Ostrava-Přívoz station, which specializes in similar interventions.
Upon arrival, firefighters prepared for predetermined hoses. “Then the older male was first released into the enclosure, who has lived in the enclosure for a long time. And after a while the younger new male, ”Langer said.
But the bears managed their acquaintance in peace, the younger bears, according to nurses, acknowledged their subordinate role. “We have been preparing for several weeks for a meeting of bears. Not only the timing and impact of the weather, but above all the preparation of both individuals for their first acquaintance, played a role. Despite the preparation, we greatly appreciated the presence of firefighters, ”admitted Zooložka Pavla Slavíčková.
If the bears started to do each other, the nurses would, due to the size of the animals and the size of the enclosure, would be able to separate them as quickly as possible.
Firefighters also praised the event in the zoo. « The main objectives of the exercise included verification of the exit times called units, practicing tactics of intervention and knowledge of the commander in connection with solving similar situations, » explained firefighter spokeswoman Langerová.
She added that the emphasis was also placed on the road between intervening firefighters and commander through radio stations. « The key element was also cooperation with the staff of the zoo, as well as practicing the principles for creating a hose line, » the fire brigade spokeswoman said the pros.
