Horror at the 8-year-old’s birthday. Boy found dead in the room
The tragedy took place on April 27, 2024 at home in Birkenhead, England. Just before 14:00, Joshua was found unconscious in his room. There was a « 8 » balloon at his head. The boy was immediately taken to the Arrow Park hospital, but despite the dramatic fight for his life – he died the same evening at 19:23.
Now, more complete information has been revealed about the causes of the boy’s death after a formal investigation. Coroner Andre Rebello during the hearing said simply: « Hel is not poisonous, but he displaces oxygen. Joshua had nothing to breathe. All you need is a few minutes without oxygen and life can no longer be saved. It was the most tragic of possible accidents. »

The boy of the boy, Carly, cannot shake off after losing a child. « Joshua was unique – he had the brightest blue eyes and the most mischievous smile. He loved to hug friends. He left in the worst possible way.
Today he appeals to all parents: « Do not buy children with helium balloons. Your world can change in a minute. These balloons receive life. »
Carly admits that since then he has been struggling with PTSD and depression. Memories of that day persecute her every day.

The boy had no idea what could happen
At the time of the tragedy, Joshua was alone in the room. There is no evidence that the boy knew how dangerous Hel could be.
« Maybe he just played a balloon, maybe he wanted to hear his voice changing. He was a little boy who had no idea that this fun could kill him, » said Koroner.
The Dunbar family was a happy six – full of life, smile and together. Today, Carly says: « I’m not the same person anymore. I don’t meet myself. Part of me has gone with him. »
Carly emphasizes that if at least one person after reading her story resigns from buying helium balloons – it can mean a saved life. « All this so that it does not happen to another child. Give up Hel. Choose balloons with air – they are equally nice. They don’t kill. »
