Honey and lace are similar in some way – both are slowly formed
The thirty -three festival of Idrija Lace will connect the tradition of Idrija knitting with beekeeping heritage this year. Not by accident – in the municipality this year they celebrate the 100th anniversary a city beekeeper and 45 years of operation of the Idrija Beekeeping Society. In the rich program, however, the queen will always be lace.
The Idrija Lace Festival is the largest ethnological, cultural, educational and economic event in Idrija. With a few interruptions since 1953. Visitors from near and far can be taught in one June weekend about the lacemaking tradition, the history of the city and its inhabitants, and in recent years the festival events have also been intertwined with culinary offerings and exhibitions. The festival’s constant remains the Sunday national competition of children and adults in kneeling for the trophy Ivanka Ferjančič – the first lacemakers in the Idrija lace school.
You could say that this time festival They are characterized by anniversaries. Not just the two; This year also celebrates the Idrija Rudar String Association, 360 years of operation. The opening ceremony will thus intertwine the tales from the hives with the stories of the story of kneel and beekeeping, while marking the jubilee of the musicians.
Visitors to the festival will be able to watch the fair and art crafts and lacemaking aids, the Huda Kitchen will pamper the chocolates with a culinary offer, there will be a sweet corner on the market, they are preparing animations for children, children’s performances and dance performances …
As part of the festival, home beekeepers will prepare a solemn academy, a taste of honey, a lecture on its beneficial effects, and to organize creative family workshops of drawing hive endings and the production of wax candles. On Saturday and Sunday, they invite you to a guided tour of the city apiary and to the Hunt for Honey Treasure.

This year, 17 innovative exhibitions will be on display, the central ones were designed by members of the Idrija Lace Lacer Association, and will be dedicated to bees. The organizer, the Tourism Institute, also provided a fun program. On Saturday, the music group of the Generation and Orlek and Karlo Kirri with the White Chronicle project will perform on the big stage on City Square, and on Sunday on the small stage on Sv. Achacia is returned by the Venetian boys.
And what impress visitors most? The director of the Tourism Institute highlighted two types of guests: « Lacer and lacemakers who come to the festival because of the really exceptional and numerous exhibitions we have, and the audience we visit because of a varied accompanying program and uses it as a one -day trip to Idrija. »
According to Valeria Božič, the festival again proves every year that lace is not only a past, but a living heritage that, with every new interpretation, becomes part of the modern world.
