Honesty that shocks tourists: Residents of this European country will tell you everything in the face – life
If you are uncomfortable when someone « too sincerely » says what he thinks, then the Netherlands is not your ideal destination. There is no environment there – everything is said clear, loud and without twisting.
Honesty without censorship
Honesty is so deeply rooted in the Dutch society that there is a special word for her: BescrableSebaarheid, which can be translated as the ability to talk about everything, and the idea behind it is to be open to talk openly, it says Punkufer.hr.
« I only lived in Amsterdam only a year when we met my husband friends in the famous city Wondelpark. We’ve chosen her places in sight. When he finally appeared – as if he had emerged anything – he didn’t ask us: ‘What would you like to order?‘ or ‘Can I get you something?‘. « Maybe what he said in English had an effect, but I still shocked that the teacher from the Netherlands had later explained to me that the Dutch was as directly as in Amsterdam, » he reveals his experience for BBC and adds:
« Ben Kouts, author of the book ‘Why are the Dutch different‘moved to The Netherlands from the UK. He recalls similar experiences, for example when he was stirred, and his friend immediately told him that his hairstyle was at no means. Over time, Ben concluded that the Dutch did not act. Even in the business world, if you say something insignificant, it won’t spare you or keep quiet about it.
Shock for British
« In Britain people usually communicate and behave in a way that does not talk to the train, but there is a unwritten rule that people have the right. And if someone is offended – it’s not their problem, » Koots.
« Many strangers consider this behavior, and even arrogant. I was at least ten Dutches, but no one needed help. But I didn’t need it, the Dutch realized that I didn’t need it », explains Olga.
Curtainless windows
The concept of privacy is completely different than in many other countries, and the Dutch is not a problem to discuss intimate topics publicly. People will discuss their own health problems, divorce or love life without complexes, in a crowded restaurant or cafe. They don’t see reason to hide it.
In the Netherlands, directivity and transparency are accepted, and however people are open, it also can be seen in that they do not have curtains on the windows, so everyone can peek into their houses and apartments.
None of the topics seems to be banned in the Netherlands – about drugs, prostitution and euthanasia is publicly spoken, but there are still things that are outside the table. You will rarely hear the Dutch to talk about salaries, pensions, the size of your car or apartment. Other nations often complain that the Dutch lacks empathy. It is not known whether it is true or not – but it is clear that the truth in the Netherlands takes precedence over feelings.
