Hockey World Championship 2025: Interview with Vladimir Orszagh after losing to Austria

How would you evaluate the meeting against Austria?
Very bad first period on our side. We had the first shot around ten minutes. We did not go our feet, we did not go head, we were too late everywhere.
The opponent lost us, whether in personal or skating fights. Simply, the first third cost us a better result.
From the second period we improved, we had pressure, we pushed more into the gate. In the third period we were deservedly rewarded, at least a equalizing goal, but in the end we have only a point, so we are disappointed.
We did not lose the match in the raids, but in the first period.
How do you explain worse entry into the match?
Hard to say. Of course, we had a match yesterday, the Austrians were more relaxed, but it couldn’t be an excuse. We just have to handle it and be ready. Just as our feet went in the second, third period, so they must go from the beginning
The Austrians started the match very actively and took the lead 2: 0. Did you surprise you with something?
The Austrians have not surprised us. We knew they played two very good matches against Finland and Sweden. We knew they were good in fights and skating well.
We were not prepared on our feet or head. They simply exalted us, they were more active. In addition, the Austrians had a few renumbering, where he (Hlavaj) had to pull out important interventions.
After the last raid, Michal Krištof was quite upset. How did you see the situation?
I asked the referees how they saw it. They told me they first saw the end and then the foul.
Later, I asked them what would happen, or what should happen if there was a foul first and then the ending. Because I think it was. At least it follows from the shot we had. But I have to look at it from other angles. In this case, a separate raid should be repeated.
But we’ll do nothing about it. We did not lose the match in the raids, but in the first period. We cannot talk to the referees. We had power plays in which we didn’t invent anything.
There we need to work and be more effective. We do not have to score a goal from each power play, but we have to create pressure, momentum. When another formation comes, he is excited because he sees that we had a chance. It doesn’t work for us yet.
What did you tell the players after the first period?
I didn’t shout at the players. The players realized that we had to change something and especially add. Finally, they showed character.
It is also necessary to give credit to the Austrian team, they played a very good match. The first period was followed by performances from previous matches.
The guys fought, unlocking it, but the first third cost us more points.
What did you enjoy from the performance against Austria and what not?
The positive thing was that the guys skated. It was a tough physical match, the Austrians played well, many shots blocked. We were hard to get in front of the goal.
The players wanted. We can’t tell them that two -thirds did not want. We deserve a minimum point.
The negative is definitely the entrance to the match. This cannot happen to us against any opponent in the tournament.
You lost the points you probably counted. Have you thought that you will now have to score against one of the favorites?
We want to win every match. We want to torment each opponent at least. The group is very balanced. When we look at the results of the matches, the French bothered Finland. Everybody has strength today.
We have another match France. We must be prepared from the first minute. Just as we were prepared for Slovenia.

The substitute Maxim Čajkovič also jumped into the match. At the beginning he was up to 13. The attacker, but later in the match you moved him higher. How did you like his performance?
It was obvious that he was relaxed, had a taste. He certainly helped us.
Did you think about putting the defender Samuel Kňažek in the power play?
Sami came only recently, we haven’t had one proper training together yet. It’s an alternative. We didn’t want to overwhelm him to play a lot. We wanted to give him space to regenerate. He came and played two in a row.
Are you satisfied with the performance of the Dvorský – Chromiak – Sýkora?
Dalibor is 19 years old. We cannot expect to come and save us. Of course, some things must and should do better, but it’s still his first championship. We do not plan to dispose of it.
He’s an offensive player, we need some offensive from him. Some things must be improved, but we are talking about every player in the team. I am still returning to being the youngest team in the team and is only 19 years old, so I would be very careful.
Will we be thinking about the changes in the line -up towards the match against France?
We will look at being successful as a team and not disrupted chemistry in individual attacks. We sit down and think.
You mentioned power plays, which were also problematic in the past. What can be done in such a short tournament?
Hard to say. The matches go in a quick order and we are not going to play properly. Especially when new players come to the team.
Certainly we will have in front of France, where all players will be. We try something there. We’ll see how it goes.
Are you thinking about changes in power play?
Of course. We had enough of them, we scored only one goal. We just have to help with the power play.
