The opera sounds in German, this is a lot of work in two acts and ten scenes. The break with a break lasts three and a half hours. The libretto composer has written herself, and Kerstin Shimeler-Bach has also participated in the process. Unsuka China is one of today’s most prominent composers. She was born in Seoul and started music studies where 1985-1988. He continued at the Hamburg Music and Theater Higher Education Institution with Professor Gearge Ligett. Since the late 1980s, the artist has been living in Berlin.

Unsuka China’s music is played by the best symphonic orchestras in the world, and is a winner of many prestigious prizes. The dark side of the Moon is the author’s second opera. The first – Alice in the Wonderland – was premiered in 2007 under the leadership of conductor Kent Nagano at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich.

The dark sides of the moon The story has been inspired by the life and work of quantum pioneer, Nobel Prize winner Wolfgang Pauli (1900-1958), as well as his relationship with psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Karl Gustav Jung (1875-1961) – this relationship resembles Faust and Mephistophel. The Libretto reflects the composer’s interest in physics and cosmology.

The main character of the opera is Doctor Cyron, a great scientist whose colleagues respect and envy, but are also afraid of him. Cyron tends to be rude and intolerant to those around him. Every night, three characters in dreams are persecuted – the creature of the Light, Anima and the Light Girl, as well as mysterious numbers and mystical symbols. They give Kiron unbearably intense feelings, and in communication with these images, he gains his scientific visions, which are at the heart of his success. Kiron has a double life – during the day he is a highly respected intellectual, but at night is immersed in the world of darkness, desperately searching for human happiness. The scientist’s self -control disappears, and Cyron wants his dreams to analyze the soul healer Astarot. The contract with him has a fatal consequence.

The dark side of the moon There is one of the rare operas with no love, although heroes are Kiron’s former favorite Miriel. The scientist’s intellectual and existential search and suffering are in the foreground. Head in the image of Ciron is demonstrated by American baritone Thomas – his voice, acting play and charisma are the throbbing, restless heart of these performances. The Danish baritone Bo Skovhus is an impressive brilliant and scary demonic rogue Astarot. Miriel’s emotionally sings the Australian soprano Shavon Steg. Ciron’s dream images are embodied by English tenor Andrew Dickinson, Korean countertenor Kangmin Justin Kim and Korean soprano Narea Sona.

The show involves a large soloist ensemble and choir. Conductor Kent Nagano allows you to feel the dynamism and energy of an ambitious and glorious sound world. She conjures up the tragedy of man in her music. « This is not the story that one person leaves the other. The story is in the center of the situation in which the man leaves his vision, the soul, and ideal – everything that makes him human, » explains Unsuk China. Theater association Dead Center Has created a visually effective multimedia production in which special effects do not overdo it, but emphasize the difficult mind of the protagonist.

Opera The dark side of the moon Hamburg will also feature May 27 and 31, as well as June 5.
