High time to book this summer’s renovation after raised ROT deductions: « Many will be fully booked »

The construction industry has tough years behind it. Last year, more than 2,000 construction companies went bankrupt, the highest figure of over 30 years, according to figures from the Agency Growth Analysis. At the same time, the unemployment rate for the members of Byggnads is approaching eleven percent.

From May 12, the root deduction is now being temporarily raised, from 30 to 50 percent, until the turn of the year.

The increase has been criticized from, among other things, Byggnads for not leading to increased new construction, which would seriously overcome unemployment, according to the trade union.

At the same time, companies are now starting to notice an increased interest in home renovations in the tracks of the raise.

In Knivsta south of Uppsala, Erik Bolander, CEO of the company Hantverksbyrån Stockholm, is currently working on an extension and kitchen renovation together with the company’s vice president Kim Restrup.

– There are more requests, but we can only run on the balls we do, says Erik Bolander.

The fact that it is not the maximum amount of the root deduction that is raised this time, but instead you can deduct a larger proportion of the labor cost, makes a slightly simpler job benefit, according to Bolander.

Kim Restrup at the Craft Agency Stockholm has seen that requests for renovations have increased significantly since the announcement that the root day is increased from 30 to 50 percent.

– The big jobs are already up in the roof for root. It is above all the smaller and medium -sized jobs that have become more. People who fit in, and feel that they may be able to build that little terrace on the front that they have dreamed of now when the workforce becomes cheaper, he says.

At the same time, construction companies disappeared from the market as a result of bankruptcies makes it now more difficult to find a craftsman for this summer’s project, Bolander believes.

– The risk is that those who remain have more to do, and that it is not so that it is enough for anyone who wants help.

The company Nätterlund Entreprenad in Örebro, which together with its subsidiary has 16 employees, has also seen a significant increase in the number of requests for renovations. It is about roofing, facade and window work, to renovating kitchens and bathrooms. The company is now planning to recruit two or three people.

– It’s a clear increase. The personnel we have is not enough, says Alexander Nätterlund, CEO and owner.

Prior to the summer, the company’s booking rate is already 80 percent. Alexander Nätterlund also believes that the pressure will be higher than usual this summer.

– There will be waiting times. Many will be fully booked, he says.

Åkesson Bygg in Kalmar and Oskarshamn, with a total of 65 employees, are largely fully booked until after the holiday.

– It becomes a boost when the root deduction is raised, especially it applies to labor -intensive jobs as roof switching on villas. The private market has been very careful for the past 3-4 years. We have seen a significant increase from a very low level to a higher level, says Alex Åkesson, owner and CEO.

However, Alex Åkesson does not believe that private individuals will have problems finding craftsmen for summer renovations.

– All small house builders have been very quiet for the past two years. There should be labor to take care of it, he says.

However, all construction companies focused on renovations with private individuals do not notice an increased interest right now, DN’s survey shows.

The industry and employers’ organization The Construction Companies assesses that the increase in the root deduction will provide increased demand. But how many who actually do strokes in their kitchen renovation or build a patio in the coming time is hard to know.

Johan Deremar, economist and forecast manager at the construction companies.

– It’s difficult to assess. Interest rates have gone down, and since the pandemic has also gone down, which means that there may be a craving. But at the same time, we have stock exchange and that there are troubled times. It may not be a « tokboom ». This is the world’s situation too shaky, says Johan Deremar, economist and forecast manager at the construction companies.

However, the construction companies have also received indications that the interest in renovating has increased.

– Data has not come in yet, but we have so far heard anecdotes that demand has increased and that the phones have started to call, says Deremar.

No matter how big the pressure is on craftsmen, it is now starting to be high time to book this summer’s renovation, if you want to be sure it will get rid of.

– That’s really location. If you want someone this summer, you should contact already. I would recommend that, says Johan Deremar.

Facts.The root deduction

The root deduction was introduced in December 2008 and means that you have to pay less in tax for the labor cost when carrying out repairs, maintenance and renovations of certain homes.

From May 12 until the turn of the year, the tax reduction is now being raised on root jobs from 30 percent to 50 percent. This means that if you buy craft services with root deductions for SEK 100,000, you only pay SEK 50,000. The rest gets the entrepreneur from the Swedish Tax Agency.

The highest amount that can be obtained in total for both the root and route services is SEK 75,000. Of that amount, a maximum of SEK 50,000 may be root services. If you are two people in the household, double amounts apply.

The increased root deduction was the government’s largest investment in the spring budget. In total, it is estimated to cost SEK 4.35 billion.
