The fire brigade has been pulled out en masse for a heavy house fire in the Van Havrelei in Deurne. The fire, which caused a large plume of smoke, is now under control. A mother and her 1-year-old child were taken to the hospital.

The fire in the Van Havrelei broke out around 10.30 am. Brandweer Zone Antwerp immediately pulled out with different teams. The seriousness of the situation was quickly clear, when the firefighters arrive, the firefighters already noticed a large, black plume of smoke.

Local residents were given a be-alert with the demand to close windows and doors. Brandweer Zone Antwerp got the fire under control a little after 11 hours. The fire originated in a garage behind the house where people were working on a vehicle. At some point the car caught fire.

« The fire is now under control and the smoke has fallen sharply, » confirms spokesman Jasmien O of the Antwerp fire brigade. « We are currently still on site to extinguish and take aftercare actions, but the deployment is already being scaled up. » Two apartments above the car workshop were smoking damage.

Three people needed care. « A mother and her 1-year-old child were taken to the Antwerp University Hospital (UZA) because of light smoke inhalation, » says police spokesman Kim Bastiaens.
