Heavy heathland on Mechelense Heide in As and Maasmechelen: Gigantic plume of smoke from far (inland)
There is currently a heavy heathland raging on the Mechelen heath, on the territory of As and Maasmechelen. The fire brigade is present with power to fight fire. The gigantic plume of smoke can be seen from far and is observed from different neighborhood municipalities.
The fire brigade zone of Oost-Limburg says that they are on site with nine forest fire trucks and several tankers. They ask everyone who is bothered by the smoke, to close windows and doors and eliminate ventilation. The Maasmechelen fire brigade receives support from different angles, including from the posts in Genk, Lanaken, Bilzen and Bree. Drones are also used to map the hot spots.
The gigantic plume of smoke is observed from different neighboring municipalities. In Opgrimbie, Mopertingen, Rekem and Lanaken, smoke and fire scent are determined. The police have closed the area.

Since May 13, code red for natural fires in power in Limburg nature reserves. Due to the long drought, the danger of forest and heather bonds is extremely high. For safety reasons, access to nature and forest areas is not recommended. People are asked to be careful, not to smoke and not to make fire near nature and forest areas. Nature managers and fire brigade are extra vigilant and use extra equipment and manpower.
