The good news first: In contrast to previous years, the Federal Office of Health does not expect any catch -up effects for the next year because of the premiums that are too deep – and correspondingly well -filled reserves. The health insurance companies were able to restore the balance between income and expenses.

This means that unlike 2023, 2024 and 2025, the premiums will only increase as much as health costs increase.

Now for bad news: the costs are currently increasing vigorously. In the first quarter of 2025 alone, the Federal Office of Health (BAG) booked growth of 4.9 percent compared to the previous year. « This number does not calm down, » says BAG Vice Director Thomas Christen.

Rather, the number confirms the trend: In 2024, one person had on average health services in the amount of CHF 4721 through the health insurance company. That is CHF 210 or 4.7 percent more than 2023.

Increase will be “moderate” in 2026

To avoid exactly how much the bonuses in 2026 rise, Thomas Christians do not dare to quantify. The basis for the premium round is not the current growth of the costs, but an estimate for 2026. « It is still too early for that, » said Christen.
