Heading in bankruptcy after the house was destroyed in stormy
37 -year -old Siglfirðingur, Hilmar Daníel Valgeirsson, says he looks up bankrupt after his house was destroyed in a storm in September 2023.
The deadline that Hilmari was given to remove the house has passed.
According to Hilmar, it is the opinion of experts that it will cost many million kroner for disposing of the house and a bug that lies like raw wood all over it.
The fire chief in Fjallabyggð says residents and property poses a danger from the house.
The house 660 square meters
Hilmar works as a pool guard at the Sports Center and says that there is no way for him to cover the costs needed to destroy and dispose of the house. The house stands at Aðalgata 6b and is about 660 square meters in size. This is an old freezer house built by Oscar Halldórsson in the herring adventure in the 1930s.
Last February, roof panels of the house were built on a neighboring house. Among other things, roof panels of the house were on the fence at elementary school.
Wanted to give the town the property
Hilmar suggested to the town that he would take over the property that belongs to the house so that the matter would be resolved and that the town would take care of disposal. According to Hilmar, he actually wanted to give the town the property.
Fjallabyggð sought the opinion of a lawyer in the case who considered the town not to take over the house and the property. According to Hilmar, he has been told that the town does not want to set a legal example with the performance.
« There have been various figures for the cost of disposing of this, but they are all many million ISK. At first, about 30-60 million krónur was also mentioned but also lower numbers. Even though it would be 10 million, it would be too much for me.
With the heart in the pants
In the storm, which led to the house being destroyed in 2023, winds were measured up to 49 meters per second.
Jóhann K. Jóhannsson, fire chief in Fjallabyggð, says that residents and property poses a danger of the house.
« It returned to the house in September 2023 and then back in February this year. The first time, a roof went to the house, cars and meadows and the second time the rest of the roof went to the house, » says Jóhann.
He says that in the immediate vicinity there are restaurants, residential and elementary schools.
« You have actually had the heart in your pants when a deep downturn has approached. One of the forks is gone from the house and so it is very unsafe, » says Jóhann.
All insecure if damage occurs
Jóhann considers the matter to be thoughtful in many ways. Thus, natural disasters insurance does not pay the damage, despite the fact that the Freyja guard ship has measured wind speeds of 49 meters per second, and the fire insurance is not used as there was no fire damage.
« So if further damage in the house will be damaged by a third party, then all the persons are uninsured in the case, » says Jóhann.
He says the town does not have the authority to enter the area and throw out the junk and other. It is such a political decision whether the town will be on Hilmar’s proposal to take over the house.
Assumes that the matter will end up with the town
Thorir Hákonarson, appointed mayor of Fjallabyggð, says that a lawyer’s opinion has been sought as to whether the town has been able to buy the property. He says that the purchase has been talked about rather than a takeover because Hilmar wanted to get some of the real estate fees refunded.
« The town council therefore rejected after the lawyer had reviewed the case. The case is in the process of the Health Authority and it is not we who are demanding the man. I suppose the case will end up with us again if nothing is dealt with. Then we will talk to the man, » says Thorir.
