It will be examined by experts.

Gemer Jablonec. The area above the Gemer Jablonc, which is part of our only UNESCO geopark Novohrad – Nógrad, who is the first cross -border, continues to surprise.

After the biggest sapphires they have been found in the Carpathians, she released another remarkable piece. This time, however, it is not a blue sapphire, but another precious gem, which is considered one of the oldest minerals on Earth.

We are talking about zircon, which in the abandoned quarry above the village in the district of Rimavská Sobota found the well -known treasure hunter Ladislav Oravec from Fiľakov.

It is made by its size. After a professional analysis, he will most likely be referred to as the largest zircon in basalt, which has been found in the Carpathian arc so far.

« I have found five zircons in the area in the past, but they only measured up to two millimeters.

But when the basalt saw a « bloody red eye » in the bushes, he had no idea that at that moment he scored another first place in Slovakia.

« He’s half a centimeter. So I knew immediately that not only among the sapphires I had a king, as I called one of the big blue gems I discovered, but also among zircons. I haven’t found similar in twelve years.

He also sent a photo of his finding to Daniel Ozdín, curator of the Mineralogical Museum at the Faculty of Science of Comenius University in Bratislavaat the Department of Mineralogy, Petrology and Bearing Geology.

« Meanwhile, it looks like Laco has recorded another record catch after sapphires. The zirconium is commonly found in granite, but it is only a naked eye barely noticeable crystals that reach exceptionally a maximum size of one millimeter. up to three millimeters, in Poland and at Ukraine up to two millimeters, in Romania up to four millimeters. In addition, zircons in basalts have a different shape and coloring. They are mostly pink, this latest is brown -red, ”explained mineral expert.

Experts talk about extraordinary findings

The fact that it is a remarkable finding was also confirmed by Štefan Faršang from the University of Geneva. At the same time, in terms of the finds of our largest gems – blue sapphires, he highlighted the extraordinary importance of the area over the Gemer Jablonec.

« It is really exceptional. The areas with the occurrence of alkaline basalts, such as Cerová vrchovina, or the territory of the Geopark Novohrad – Nógrad, are several within the Carpathian Basin. For example, one relatively large extends over Balaton in Hungary. Compares with those found by Laco over the Gemer Jablonc are only smaller, while the Nograd – Nógrad is over one centimeter.

During his last visit to Slovakia, he headed with Ladislav Oravec to Loma nad Gemer Jablonec and on the return trip to Switzerland he packed new samples for a detailed review.

He was also interested in sapphire, which Fiľakovčan with a good nose on the gems found only recently. It is in a rock that is visually different from normal basalt. Daniel Ozdín, together with his colleagues Pavel Uher and Štefan Faršang, is also going to explore him in detail.

« So far, we cannot exactly determine what rock it is. The answer will give us a detailed analysis, » added an experienced mineralogist, adding that from a Central European point of view it is indeed a significant department of sapphires.

It is probably one of the two most important. The second one is in the Czech Republic. However, sapphires from the quarry are exceptional and there is a lot of interest, ”Ozdín concluded.

The sapphire occurring in Balzal in Bone Valley was documented for the first time in 1899 by mineralogist and geologist Július Szadeczky. After a hundred years it was found again, although only ventilated in sediments.

His scientific review was provided by Professor of Mineralogy at Comenius University in Bratislava Pavel Uher, along with other colleagues.

In Novohrad, the sapphire fever was unleashed

The area is currently the most important site of this gem in the entire Carpathians. Together with Opal from Dubník, this is the only Slovak gems.

So far, the largest sapphire in Balzal in Slovakia was found in the territory of Slovakia Ladislav Oravec last July on a rainwashed forest road. Because of its shape and color, it called it a tear of the ocean. It measures almost two centimeters.

Previously, his findings were unleashed in Gemer and in Novohrad Zafír’s fever, as he took care of a big stir in 2016. At that time he found the king. So he named the gem of 1.43 cm. Four years later he shocked another 1.6-centimeter sapphire.

At the end of last year, he said that the tear of the ocean had completed his record shamrock. However, this year he is already looking forward to a unique four -leaf clover and believes that the most remarkable piece of him is still waiting for him in the old quarry. And maybe it’s not just a sapphire, but a zircon.

The blue sapphires of the remarkable dimensions found by Ladislav Oravec will be able to see the museums and gallery in the Castle Museum in Fiľakov during the May Night of Museums and Gallery. They will also exhibit the aforementioned zircon, which Ladislav Oravec named after the town in which he lives – Fiľakovo.
