He was to marry Santorini. He fell from the cliff, a wedding for 45,000 pounds canceled
41-year-old Jake Elliot, a security guard from Kent in south-eastern England, together with their fiancee Robyn Stanley (39 years old) planned a dream of dreams at Santorini. There was everything: fairy -tale scenery, decorations, as well as 52 guests from Great Britain. Everything fell in an instant. The groom met a drama that no one predicted.
Jump to the wall and … a fall into the abyss
As « The Sun » describes, Jake returned to the hotel after dinner with friends. On a narrow, coastal path, he tried to give way to passers -by, jumping on a low wall. He lost his balance and fell down, from about 30 m in height.
– I remember how I tried to catch the rocks, but there was nothing for. I fell into the dark. I heard someone screaming my name. I wanted to answer, but I couldn’t – says Jake, quoted by the British newspaper.
Hospital instead of the altar
The man was taken in a serious condition to the hospital in Santorini. Diagnosis: broken spine, seven broken ribs, damaged spleen, broken leg and ankle. The next day he was transported by medical plane to the hospital in Athens.
The fiancee was terrified.
– I thought he was dead. When I saw him, he said, but we didn’t know if he would walk – he recalls in an interview with « The Sun ». – I was devastated that we couldn’t get married. But then I thought: I don’t care about this stupid wedding. I just want him to live.
Ceremony canceled. The guests returned home
As many as 52 guests from Great Britain arrived at Santorini’s wedding. Everyone returned home without a ceremony. Jake spent two weeks in the hospital in Athens, then nine days in the hospital in Kent. He underwent several operations, and after three months of rehabilitation he returned to work.
Second chance – and real « yes »
A year after the accident, the couple returned to Santorini. This time everything succeeded. They swore love, health and perseverance without dramas. The new wedding cost them another 15,000 pounds (approx. PLN 80,000), but as they emphasize, this day was really priceless.
– It was amazing. Everyone who was with us a year earlier came back. This day was magical – Jake said in an interview with « The Sun ». – All this experience gave us a completely new view of life.
