Halla remembers the classmate from Minnesota
Halla Hrund Logadóttir, MP for the Progressive Party, recalled Melissa Hortman, MP Minnesota and his former classmate, who was killed this weekend in the parliamentary pulpit today.
Halla and Hortman were a classmate at Harvard University, where they studied a master’s degree in public administration.
A model in politics
Halla recalled Hortman as one of his role models in politics:
« She somehow managed to combine being warm, fixed, talking to those who are less able and have a long -term view. »
She says Hortman has also been known for being able to build bridges and contract people.
The day before she was murdered, Hortman voted with the Republican budget and thought « higher to appeal only to her own voters ».
Important to stretch over the corridor
Halla says the societal polarization that appeared in the weekend’s events are an example that it is important for politicians to « stretch themselves over the corridor, » work together on the media and show that despite different perspectives, ways can be found through collaboration, listening and conversation.
« When Melissa took over as a Democrat leader in the Minnesota parliament, she said: » We are not here to avoid disputes. We are here to dispute. «
Halla says such a dispute is an important part of the democratic process.
She also reiterates that despite the fact that cooperation and mediation perhaps are perhaps less steps for the success and goals of individual classes, this often produces a more consistent society.
