Half a year after Novi Sad tragedy a new protest in Belgrade


Thousands Belgrade. They called on the government to change labor law and to be responsible for the tragedy in Novi Sad. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic reiterated that the state had done everything he could and closed to the protesters.

A joint protest of students and five largest unions in the country began in the early afternoon, Serbian news agency reports Beta.

They claimed the right to victims of the accident in Novi Sad exactly six months ago and called on the government to change laws on work and strike. The current legislation, in their opinion, protects power, and with their proposed changes, they would, in their estimation, improve the protection of workers.

Union President Independence Chedanka Andrić is, according to the portal N1 Serbia expressed the belief that unions and students could achieve their goal, and urged the government and the competent ministry to respond to their proposals as soon as possible. « These laws will not change overnight, but our patience will not be infinite either, » she noted.

One of the students gathered in front of the government building that it was half a year since the tragedy in Novi Sad, when 16 people died in the canopy, which no one was still responsible. Another student, however, stressed that their struggle is associated with the deadly consequences of corruption and that students, along with workers, strive for a fairer society.

Vucic is reported today by Serbian news agency Tanjug He reiterated that the state had done everything that was possible in terms of criminal, moral and political responsibility for the tragedy, but nevertheless has been « exposed to terror unprecedented » for six months.

He also said that there will be no transitional government, today’s « sad rallies » of those involved in blockade, and the opposition show that « it is coming to take responsibility for the crimes committed against our country. »

In Novi Sad, meanwhile, a ceremony has already ended in memory of the victims of the Novi Sad tragedy. The citizens were lit by flowers in front of the railway station, where the canopy collapsed and lit candles, and the students set up a memorial plaque with the inscription Novi Sad – 1. 2024, reports Beta.

The whole of Serbia by accident in Novi Sad was captured by mass student protests that have grown into expression of anger due to systemic corruption and repression, restricting the freedom of the media and the rule of law. Students who require responsibility and right for victims of the accident have also set several other requirements, and their fight will, according to today’s protest, enter a new phase.
