In a WhatsApp group with 150 liberals, a call is circulating to participate in a ‘Staten-General of Flemish liberalism’ on 13 May. This makes the pressure on Open VLD chairman Eva De Bleeker even greater, writes the newspaper De Morgen on her website on Sunday evening.
The States General is based on the Liberal Vlaams Verbond (LVV), but « is not an attack on Eva, » says LVV chairman Maarten de Bousser. « We just try to determine where we are, as liberals, where we want to go and how a political liberal party should deal with it. »
The group on WhatsApp now has 150 members, including Liberales chairman Lawrence Vanhove, youth chairman Sepp Tyvaert, board member and author Vincent Stuer and Brussels leader Frédéric De Gucht.
The meeting on 13 May must result in a conference text, « with clear substantive requirements, organizational proposals and choices that say where we want to go with the liberal party – and what we no longer swallow, » said the organizers.
Eva De Bleeker says that she herself has been a member of the LVV and has good contacts with the organization. She does not even exclude participation in the States General. « I think it’s good that all liberal organizations think about the future of liberalism, » said De Bleeker.
The Open VLD chairman wants to lay the foundation for a new liberal party on a large congress on a large congress during the weekend from 12 to 14 September.
