Groen wants practical tests against discrimination against the LGBTQIA+community on the rental market. That problem is underexposed, while « a roof over your head, should not depend on who you are or who you love, » says Flemish MP Fourat Ben Chikha, who puts a proposal on the table in response to the Pride in Brussels and the International Day against LGBi and Transphobia (Idahot).

A European study from 2024 shows that 12 percent of LGBTQIA+respondents already experienced discrimination when they are looking for a home. The figures rise to 32 percent in Trans women, 21 percent in trans men and 28 percent in intersex people. In -depth research at the Flemish or Belgian level is not there until today, so that the problem remains a lot underestimated, according to Groen.
« The Flemish government in our country is sitting blind. There are strong suspicions of discrimination and we know that çavaria will receive reports about it, but there is no research into it, let alone that it is being tackled, » said Ben Chikha. « With practical tests we would make two birds with one stone. »
There is also little qualitative research in other European countries, says Groen. A Dutch study with ‘Mystery Mailing’ from The Hague shows that the discrimination of gay couples is almost 9 percent higher than with heteroker couples. When the split is made between men and women, you see that especially men are disadvantaged: two men in a relationship in search of a home even experience 15 percent more discrimination than heterokouples. In other countries it remains mainly with testimonies.
