Grocery prices must be transparent and convenient comparable / day

It is set on Tuesday, June 17, amendments to the Consumer Rights Protection Law, directed and conceptually supported by the Economic, Agricultural, Environmental and Regional Policy Commission.

Since the Memorandum of Grocery Trafficking has been signed, intensive work with manufacturers and traders has been undergoing prices, and price changes could be seen this month in response to questions from deputies, said Minister of Economy Viktors Valainis. The Minister noted that retailers had expressed their readiness to include 45-50 products in the low-priced basket. The amendment is needed to give the government a delegation to develop an appropriate regulation for the price comparison tool.

The draft law provides that the CSB will collect and process both price dynamics and the data needed for the digital price tool. Any retailer will be able to submit information to the price comparison tool, while those with a turnover of more than EUR 400 million per year will be a mandatory obligation, the Ministry of Economics explained.

It is planned that the Cabinet of Ministers will determine the group and list of goods included in the basic grocery basket, including products available in the market and frequently consumed products, as well as the information to be submitted to the CSB and the procedure for submitting it.

The National Economy Commission will ask the bill to be included in the agenda of the Saeima sitting on June 19, to set urgency and to consider it immediately, the commission chairman Kaspars Briškens said. The Ministry of Economics, on the other hand, pointed out that the relevant Cabinet regulations are planned to be drafted by August this year.
