Grenland tells Donald Trump: We are not for sale, we strengthen our ties with Denmark
Greenland and Denmark on Sunday agreed to strengthen the connection in response to US President Donald Trump’s interest in taking control of these strategic Arctic island, leaders said after talking in Copenhagen. New Prime Minister Greenland Jens-Frederik Nielsen began on Saturday a three-day visit to the Danish capital, as an indicator of the unity of his semi-automatic Danish territory rich in minerals with Denmark.
« We are in an foreign policy situation that signifies the need to get closer, » Nielsen said at a joint press conference with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederixen.
Two prime ministers met due to months of tension because of Trump’s repeated statements that Greenland should become part of the United States.
« We are ready for a strong partnership (with the US) and greater development, but we want respect … We will never be a piece of assets that anyone can buy, » Nielsen said.
He also added that the continuous spread of the US consulate in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, which was agreed and before Trump assumed his duty, causes anxiety among the inhabitants of Greenland.
Frederixen stated that Denmark is ready to invest more in Greenland and financially support him, while she takes over more responsibility for her own internal affairs from Copenhagen, as part of the « modernization » of their relationship, as she described it.
Denmark called for increased cooperation with the United States in the Arctic Defense, AI Nielsen and Frederixen stated on Sunday that they were committed to strengthening defense in the region.
Danish King Frederik will travel to Greenland on Monday in further expression of solidarity.
