Greenland pushes back against high, non-welcome American visit

Usha Vance was still looking forward to it. In a video that the wife of the American vice president JD Vance Monday On her Instagram account she placed, she revealed to travel to Greenland later that week. The second lady was « in particular exhausted » that she was allowed to visit the island « during your annual National Dog Lederace, which we are proud to support it as a sponsor. » With her three children she had « already read a lot about it. »

Although with her visit she says she wants to celebrate « the long history of mutual respect and cooperation between our nations », Usha Vance will have to miss the racing huskies. The Groenlanders clearly showed this week that the high visit is not welcome, now that US President Donald Trump continues to say that he wants to incorporate their country from the United States.

The Greenland Prime Minister Múte Eede spoke of « aggressive pressure » and an « outright provocation » by the Americans. Denmark, which includes the autonomous island of the political, stated that we will « resist this unacceptable pressure. » Premies have already been held against the upcoming visit by Groenlanders with Trumpist-red Maga caps with the text ‘Make America Go Away’ and protest signs with the old Anti-American slogan ‘Yankees Go Home!’.

Visit to your own basis

The protests forced the White House to scale back the Usha Vance travel program. On Tuesday it was announced that she will only visit the American space base Pituffik (formerly Air Force Base Thule) in the northwest of the island. A visit to the Greenland Society was also deleted.

Although the Danish foreign minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen welcomed the planning of the program as « clear de-escalation », the weight of the American government delegation was at the same time weighted. This Friday, USSha Vance is no longer accompanied by the national security adviser Mike Waltz-Spil in the Signalgate scandal broken out this week-but by her own husband.

JD Vance stated in a video that he placed on social media on Tuesday afternoon that « there was so much excitement around the visit of USSha to Greenland, that I decided that I don’t let her keep her all fun ». According to the vice president, « other countries that threaten Greenland have threatened to use its territories and sea roads to threaten the US, threaten Canada and of course also threaten the population of Greenland. So we will find out how things are there. »

Even after the fuss of this week and despite Trumps billions of cuts on development cooperation, the sled dog race will be paid for a significant part this year by Washington. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs takes a few tens of thousands of dollars, American diplomats confirmed when asked to radio station NPR. The organizers of the race can declare the flight costs of the transport of the dogs, sledes and drivers from the American consulate in Nuuk.
