Aquavit – the most popular

Although Greenland’s national drink is not officially set, Aquavit (also called snap) is considered to be one of the most popular and traditional drinks closely linked to Greenland culture. Aquavit is a distilled alcoholic beverage that is made of potatoes or grains and flavored with spices and plants such as cumin, dill and fennel.

Aquavit is very popular in all Northern European countries, including Scandinavia and also in Greenland, where this drink is often presented in special events, such as Christmas or New Year celebrations, and is enjoyed at a traditional dinner or family meeting. It is often served with traditional dishes such as seafood, reindeer meat or fish.

Most often, aqual is served well cooled because the cold makes its taste softer. However, sometimes it is also enjoyed at room temperature, especially if it is served with food. Traditionally, it is drunk from small shots, similar to vodka or other strong drinks.

Some people drink aquavit as a shot (in one firewood), while others choose to drink it slowly while enjoying the nuances of spice.

Like Denmark, Greenland has a popular tradition of drinking aquavit with beer – the so -called snaps og Øl (vodka and beer).

Beer – local and imported

Beer is another popular drink. Although brewing in Greenland is limited, there are some local brands that produce beer with different recipes. Greenland also sells imported beer brands from Denmark, Sweden and other Nordic countries.

Beer is enjoyed at home celebrations as well as in local bars and restaurants, as it is one of the main drinks that locals choose to relax and socialize. Beer is also popular during the holidays, such as Easter.

One of the best -known local brands is Godthaab bryghuslocated in the capital of Nuka. This brewery produces a variety of beer types, including light and dark beer, as well as seasonal special releases.

Water is one of the most important ingredients of beer, and in Greenland uses clean glacial melting water, which gives a special tenderness and clean taste.

As the harsh climate is almost impossible to grow cereals, barley and other grains are usually imported from Denmark or other Nordic countries. Hops are also usually imported.

Some breweries are experimenting with local ingredients, such as adding alum Greenland berries (cranberries, lingonberries, black currants) or other natural beaches to give unique taste nuances.

Sometimes sea salt and arctic herbs that grow in Greenland tundra are also used.

Greenland coffee

Kahlúa (or other coffee liqueur) – dark polar nights; Grand Marnier (or Cointreau) – the sun and the fire of Greenland, which is used in the flaming presentation ritual. Whipped cream – Grenland’s snowy glaciers and cold climate.

Greenland coffee Teaching is a real show. When the coffee, whiskey and coffee liqueur blend Grand Marnier, It is then ignited and allows the flames to burn for a few seconds. The flames clear and apply whipped cream. Serve immediately to enjoy both the heat of the drink and the cream.
