Green Code Merz in Berlin
Ukrainian President Volodimir Zeleni is expected on Wednesday in Berlin at interviews with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, the German government announced, as part of diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
Merz will receive the Ukrainian president with military honors on Wednesday at noon, the Government announced in a statement.
– The focus of the visit will be German support for Ukraine as well as the efforts to achieve the cessation of fire – it adds.
Ukrainian and Russian officials met this month at the first direct negotiations since Moscow launched an invasion of her neighbor in 2022, and under the pressure of US President Donald Trump to stop the war.
However, negotiations failed to obtain an agreement on the termination of fire, and Russia made major air attacks over the weekend for three nights in a row.
While Trump has been showing hesitating support for Ukraine in recent months, Germany could play an increasingly important role as the largest military and financial supporter of the country after the United States.
Merz, a conservative who took over his duty this month, promised to take on a bigger leading role in providing support to Ukraine from his predecessor, Social Democrat Olafa Scholz.
He visited Ukraine with other European leaders a few days after becoming a chancellor, and on Monday supported Ukraine’s right to launch a long range rocket attacks on Russian territory – unlike Scholz’s cautious rhetoric on the issue.
