Greece was hit on Wednesday morning by a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1, the epicenter being located at sea, 15 kilometers from the island of Kasos, in the south of the Aegean, according to the American Institute of Geophysics (USGS), AFP reports.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 78 kilometers around 01.51 (Tuesday, 22.51 GMT). For now, no information is available on possible victims or damage.

The epicenter of the earthquake is located about 100 kilometers from the coasts of Crete and Santorini.

The earthquake felt throughout the Dodecanese archipelago. Also, the earthquake was felt in Turkey and Egypt.

The inhabitants of the area received an alert on the phone, which warned them about a possible tsunami and were urged to move away from the coast.

The region of Santorini Island in the Aegean Sea, a popular tourist destination in Greece, has experienced an exceptional seismic activity in January and February, with thousands of tripods who made some inhabitants escape.

Located on several geological faults in the southeast of the Mediterranean, Greece is regularly affected by earthquakes.

The last deadly earthquake in the archipelago took place in October 2020, on the island of Samos, in the Aegean, between Greece and Turkey. With a magnitude of 7.0, this earthquake made two dead at Samos and over 100 in the Izmir port city of Turkey.
