Great Britain picks up several sanctions against Syria. As the Foreign Ministry in London announced, restrictions on financial services and energy production should be eliminated. This supports the financial system in Syria to open up and regenerate again after the fall of the former ruler Bashar al-Assad.
The sanctions against twelve bodies are to be lifted entirely, including the Syrian Ministry of Defense, the Interior Ministry and media companies.
Sanctions against Assad allies remain
In contrast, restrictions for members of the former government and participants in the illegal trade with the synthetic drug Captagon should remain.
Changes to the sanction rules against Syria are also intended to create the possibilities of holding ex-President Assad and his allies for atrocities. At the same time, the ability to impose new sanctions is preserved – should it be necessary.
