Great Britain and the EU agreed on Restoring Relations After Brexit / Day
British Prime Minister Kyr Starmer said it « marks a new era in our relationship ». « We agree on a new strategic cooperation that is suitable for our time, » the British prime minister added.
The security agreement provides for regular talks between Brussels and London, a possible British membership in EU military missions and potential Britain’s ability to receive funding from the bloc to a new defense fund, which is expected to spend 150 billion euros.
The parties have also agreed on the cancellation of the controls imposed on the British export to the EU, in exchange for the extension of the block fishing rights for 12 years in British waters.
Starmer pointed out that the new treaties with the EU Britain will provide « real, tangible benefits » in terms of security, illegal immigration, lowering energy prices, creating new jobs and protecting new jobs.
Meanwhile, European Commission (EC) President Urzula von der Leien said this is « a big day because we are now turning the page and starting a new chapter ».
« This is so important these times because we experience an increase in geopolitical tension, but we are like -minded. We have common values, » Leya emphasized.
EU diplomats admit that the agreement on the restoration of mutual relations was reached the last moment before Monday in London’s summit of both parties, and negotiations to resolve the disagreement, in particular on the fishing rights issue until Sunday evening.
London said the economic agreement reached provides for facilitating customs control of British food and plant production, and will again restore the « free movement of goods ».
Until 2040, the British economy will provide nine billion pounds (EUR 11 billion), according to a statement from Downigstrith.
The Labor Labor -led Labor Government claims that the agreement with the EU, which was achieved by the previous conservative government with such difficulties, has given no one good.
However, Starmer, who came to power after the elections in July last year, said there were several « red lines », which he would not violate and that the return to the EU was excluded with the EU.
He also rejected the restoration of free movement between the UK and the EU.
Meanwhile, the opposition conservatives have already rejected an agreement as « surrender ».
During the Meeting of Starmer, the European Council, Chairman of the European Council, Antoni Kosti, and the Supreme Representative of the EU in Foreign Affairs, Cay Kallas was signed on cooperation on security and defense issues, as well as two other documents – a declaration on European solidarity and a Memorandum on understanding on issues such as trade, fishery and youth mobility.
Under the final agreement, Britain will retain its waters open to European fishermen for 12 years after the current agreement ends in 2026, in exchange for an indefinite time to facilitate bureaucratic obstacles to food imports from Britain.
On the mobility of young people, delegations of both parties agreed on a general wording, which will later reach a more specific agreement.
However, a specific agreement will also have to be closed later on cooperation on security issues. For example, Britain will require further negotiations to provide access to EU programs.
