Grateful to those who blow the wind
« Getting recognition is such a strange feeling because it is often as if you are doing just something in the air, but then some such confirmation comes to listen to and celebrate what you are doing and then a certain wind comes in the sail to continue, » says the musician British Elfar,
« Because at the same time as you get the prize you realize that creativity is not at all about receiving a prize. However, they get you to take the next steps, smile and thank you. »
As before, it is the hobbyist Jón Sigurðsson in Thingeyri as a custom -made prize.
Thought as a pat on the back
The long play was first delivered in 2015, but it will be the author who, in the opinion of the Board, is considered to have excelled and achieved remarkable results in the past year. This is thought of as a pat on the back and motivation for further action. In the jury’s opinion this year, among other things, it says that in recent years, Brit has climbed slowly and biting up the playlist’s playlist and online, which has naturally been reflected in increased allocations from STEF and last year has been a record year in terms of it:
« Brit is currently working on new music and premiered in the days a new song, sung in English. Hopefully, she continues her victory and most of all in Iceland.
The previous award winners are Ólafur Arnalds, Ásgeir Trausti Einarsson, Barði Jóhannesson, Hildur Guðnadóttir, Júníus Meyvant, Anna Þorvaldsdóttir, Dadi Freyr Pétursson, Margrét Rán Magnúsdóttir, Pálmi Ragnar Ásgeirsson and Friðrik Karlsson.
British quickly shot up in the starry sky because when she released her first big album, Greetings, British, by 2020, most people suddenly knew who this young and aspiring musician was.

Charms young and old
Brit was only 15 years old when she began to be publicly appeared, for example, on « off-venue » concerts related to Airwaves. However, she first stepped into the field of view in 2017 when she sent out material under her own name. It was the song « In Too Deep » but soon came the song « Shy (N) », which she did with Aroni Can.
British quickly shot up into the starry sky because when she released her first big album, Yours, Britishby 2020, most people suddenly knew who this young and aspiring musician was. A total of eight songs from the album came on the top-10 list of Spotify in Iceland, including songs such as « Quiet cowboy » and « Esjan » which in a short time became the country’s most popular song, sung equally by choirs, in kindergartens, weddings and funerals.
After how it feels that her artistic creation touches like this with people of all ages, Brit says her no one else too.
« You are just at home writing, thinking, piling and experiencing something and maybe there are more people who are fascinated because these words are said out loud. It is very unique and invaluable that all the people are with me in this, support me and is in my confusion, » she says, laughing.
« This is always a double -edged sword. It’s amazing to have this age range of people who are listening to my music. I often wonder when I’m playing concerts and watching the kids and teenagers in the hall, I am so people and my older people and my grandparents. I myself and say what I am thinking because everyone connect with me and then it does not matter what age the person is, ”she explains.

In 2021, Bríet became the most victorious of all at the Icelandic Music Prize (ITV), where she received three awards; The album of the year, singer of the year and copywriter of the year, but the year before she had been named the brightest hope of the same festival. In addition, she was awarded a prize at the Listening Awards. Last year, Bríet released the album 1000 words, along with Birni, which was named the best album in the HIP-Hop and electronic music at ITV last March.
Asked about this success and the way to her, British says she has always had a certain intuition that she is grateful to have followed.
« There is some internal strength that I have that I thank myself for having. I regularly have to remind myself and be in my power but not to doubt something about myself even though someone is in a different opinion.
It is therefore also thanks to people how far I have achieved, the people behind the scenes. First, to release just one song, to hold big concerts and maintain this success, sell merchandise and more. There are an incredible number of people I could list who are blowing this wind in my sails but sometimes it is just calm and then you have to ask for help. «
« I have also tried to compose music that doesn’t take the experience and it just doesn’t touch me anything. Then I can’t sing the way I want. »

With the music in the blood
Asked if the route has always been in the music, Brit says the question she always finds a little difficult to answer.
« Simply because it just happened a little. It was very natural to me. Of course I have memories of myself as a child standing in front of the mirror, holding a slice to sing in heel shoes and mom’s dress.
My grandfather, for example, was in the symphony and was one of the founding of the big band and my mom was the first person to start with sweat in Iceland, but there are always sung mantles. There you have also learned so much to sing and I have done it since I was 18 months old, so the music in my life comes a little from all directions, ”she says, adding that the music is something she has always applied.
« It was always a joy where the guitar was, so in every situation I tried to chase the music, which took me in all kinds of places and introduced me to various people. People connected so much through the music but I loved to sit in the middle and see everyone, sing, laugh and smile.
So I just listened to this intuition that told me: « This makes sense or I feel good when I do this and so I’m just going to do this. » So I went from singing mantles in the tent when I was a baby kid to play guitar with my dad, then learn guitar myself, sing jazz in the Icelandic bar, and love to do it all weekdays even though no one was listening, to work with producers here and there when I was 17 years old. From that, this happened very quickly. »
New album expected
Despite her young age, Brit has composed and published numerous works and is nowhere near stopped. In the days, she stepped into a foreign market for the first time with her first release in English, « Blood on My Lips », of a prospective album. The song therefore marks a milestone in her career, but « Blood on My Lips » is the first song to be released in connection with a new project she has been working on last year. She says she can’t wait to allow people to hear the results.
« I don’t really have quite a number of what these have become many songs I’ve released, but then I have a lot of stuff in stock too that I haven’t yet sent away. Pop star and always in weak « outfit », or then I don’t understand what she is saying. » So I’m going to play in this direction and in these characters in music, do something fun with it, ”she says.
But do you have any favorite song of the ones you have released?
« I suppose it’s not just » blood on my lips « which is the first song I publish after all kinds of changes in my life. I wrote it with Arnari Inga, or Young Nazareth. I then got the children’s choir of the singing school in Reykjavik to sing on it with me. In the coming months and years you will get to know me and my mood in so many different ways, but all the music ahead is composed in English. »
Always with the diary on
A journalist plays outright curiosity to know each British to seek inspiration.
« He always comes from some personal experience. The experience that you clamps over and puts in a new costume or just puts it straight out. It is very natural for me to be there and it is somehow the environment I grew up in, but in my family things were just said straight out and sincerely.
I have also tried to compose music that doesn’t take the experience and it just doesn’t touch me. Then I can’t sing the way I want. I just hear that I’m not singing true unless I connect to the text, ”she says, mentioning that every day there is really something in the environment that she can use in the songwriting.
« Whether you are in some conversation in a cafe where you hear some sentence or a relationship between two individuals that you long to have or have experienced. I always have the diary with me, ready to write down.
Sometimes there is some word and then the subconscious begins to speak and from that there is a phrase as a hummar. Then the puzzle starts. This is therefore different, sometimes the entire sentences come to mind and there will be a whole song but then I know maybe I want to negotiate something but decide not to do it immediately because sometimes the subject is too big so you keep it for a better time, « she says for explanation.
Countable country ball
As mentioned earlier, Brit has many iron in the fire, but asked in the plans this summer, she says they are most characterized by travels around the country and the publication of new music.
« I’m going to take a little circle around the country and play all kinds of gigs here and there. There will be such a good old » British Carbon Ballet Ballagig « that I love. I also have a concert in Bæjarbioo at the end of June and at the end of October my album will be Yours, British five years and then I’m going to offer film shows that I did in 2021 where I played all the songs on the album in one day, all in one shot and recorded on film.
This will be in the University Cinema and in the future shown in the Art Museum, which is very exciting. So it’s just this music that I’ve been waiting to release in English. I just hope that Icelanders want to be with me in it as they have been with me so far. «
Finally, if she intends to take advantage of her new long play in the next songwriting, she answers yes.
« I haven’t played on a long -term play myself, but this is a instrument that you don’t often see. It naturally has just a few strings and is very minimalist, but you don’t have to try using the instrument at once, » she says, laughing.
