The federal government wants to relax the diploma requirements for civil servants and also look at skills and the potential of applicants. « This way we can attract more suitable talents, » says Minister of Civil Service Vanessa Matz (Les Engagés) on the Knack website.
Those who want to apply for the government today must meet specific diploma requirements. On the website of the Platform for Public Jobs Werkenvoor.be It is stated per position which diploma is required. For example, a ‘specialist accounting’ must have a master’s degree, while no diploma is needed for a ‘polyvalent technical employee’.
Matz, however, wants government services to be able to look wider than just diplomas. « The way people acquire skills is changing, » says her cabinet. « That also requires a more open and inclusive approach to recruitment from the government, which is based on the real skills and potential. »
Practice today already exists for IT functions, where experience and skills generally weigh more than formal diplomas. « We see that the trend is gradually spreading to other sectors, » says Matz. Both Werkenvoor.be and individual government services can take the initiative to relax the diploma requirements, for example if a recruitment procedure does not yield the desired profile.
Although, according to Matz, there are clear limits to the relaxation. « For protected professions, such as a doctor, a diploma remains necessary. »
