Government explains how it wants to weaken the increase in electricity prices
The development of electricity prices continues to worry the representatives of Déi Gréng. It must be prevented that those who have already invested in the ecological turn – such as in electric cars or heat pumps – are punished at a time increasing electricity costs, MP Joëlle asked the Greens. Claude Seywert, the director of Encevo, had said last year that he would expect around 30 percent to increase in Luxembourg this year.
On Thursday, Welfling filed an application in the Commission for Economic Affairs and Energy in which the government was asked to « guarantee an affordable and competitive electricity price for households and at the same time compensate for the need for future investments for the energy transition ».
« Historical investments »
Energy Minister Lex Delles recalled the most important measures that the government took to compensate for the increase in electricity prices for private households. For example, a compensation mechanism was decided to limit the price increase between 2024 and 2025 to 30 percent.
« Electricity must remain cheaper than fossil fuels »
A legal analysis is currently underway to clarify the extent to which the state can participate in the financing of the power grid. Due to the energy transition, “historical investments” are required, according to Delles. In addition, a national strategy for building large storage batteries is used to compensate for load tips.
