The hall where Christ held dinner was called Cenakul, which at the time marked the entire first floor in the Old Roman houses. Before eating, Jesus washed his feet to his disciples, which was surprised by all the assembled. At the time, the host made sure to wash their feet with the guests, sending their servants to do so. It was an act that would by no means do teachers or rabbi. Jesus wanted to show that act that everyone was equal, whether you were a teacher or servant. He wanted to have no better than others for dinner, to rule humility, fellowship and love among them. He showed that true authority came through serving, not through the rule of others.
By doing his legs washed by the apostles, Jesus did not want to introduce a rite, but to provide a lesson about serving one another. He showed them with his example that they needed to serve others humbly and without prejudice.
At dinner, Jesus forwarded the cup with the wine of the apostles and said:
– Take it and add one another! For I tell you, from now on I will no longer drink from the genus Trsov until the kingdom of God comes (Luke 22:17, 18).
Jesus wanted all to be clear to everyone that his death was approaching. Then he reached the bread and gave it to Judah, he said he would betray him. He distributed the rest of the bread to the apostles. During the rite, he spoke of his upcoming victim on the cross:
– This is my body that surrenders for you. (Lk 22,19)
Jesus wanted to say that he was ready to sacrifice himself for his disciples (and all people), because the victim of the body is not only a physical death, but a divine tradition for the salvation of man. The broken bread lays the foundation of the sacrament of the Eucharist, where believers not only « remember » his death, but participate in him, receiving his body through the Eucharist.
The dinner was followed by a prayer where Jesus prayed for all His disciples that God was guarding them and to live in peace and harm. Plus, he prayed for no one more denigrating the name of God, but that everyone respects and glory.
Jesus headed to the Garden of Gethsem with twelve, but separated himself with Peter, James and John, so that he would hand over his suffering to his father in intimate prayer. After his prayer, they came for him and then his torment followed.
On Holy Thursday, we should behave calmly, dignity with respect, because it is a day of great holiness and deep love. This is the day when we remember that Jesus: served others (washed his feet to the disciples), established the Holy Mass (Eucharist) and gave himself out of love.
