Meat of brown bears, protected species in the European Union, could soon be available for eating in Slovakia, as the government approved sales for sale.

Last month, a plan for a shooting for about a quarter of 1,300 brown bears in the country was approved in response to some recent deadly attacks.

This procedure approved by the state was criticized by the patrons of nature and opposition politicians, even in the European Parliament.

The international community for nature protection classified a brown bear as a « almost endangered » species.

However, the Slovak government continues the plan and this week has announced that the meats from the killed bears will sell in order to prevent throwing.

Since next week, organizations under the Ministry of Environmental Protection may offer meat for sale, provided all legal and hygienic conditions are met.

The Secretary of State Filip Kufa called « wastefuling » which the animals previously sends in the casting facilities.

« Any shot of an animal that meets certain conditions will be available to eat.

« Why? Because the bear meat is edible, » he said.

The bears became a political issue in Slovakia after the growing number of attacks on people, some of which were deadly.

Slovakia is in the number of attacks in another place in Europe, behind Romania, which is estimated to have about 13,000 brown bears.

A total of 54 bear attacks from 2000 were reported in Slovakia. Until 2020. Years.

The average number of attacks also rose to 10 per year, show the frame figures.

In April, a man was killed as he walked in the woods in Central Slovakia.

Shortly after that, Prime Minister Robert Fico announced that he would start a shoot.

« We can’t live in the country where people are afraid to go to the woods, » he said.

He announced that 350 brown bears will be killed, the figure equal to the entire population of species in Spain.

His government claims that the problem of bear overcrowding is the cause of increased number of attacks.

However, environmental groups and critics say the attention should be paid to the precaution.

Mihal Vižik, Ecology and European Parliament from the opposition party Progressive Slovakia, said last month for BBC that the government plan was « absurd » to limit the number of attacks « unseen destruction of this protected species ».

Vižik argues that thousands of bear meetings and people go without incidents per year and hope that the European Commission will intervene.

Miroslava Abela from the Slovak branch of the World Organization Grinpis She called the plan of destruction « Fully reckless » accusing the government of ignoring the laws on the protection of nature and scientific advice.

Brown bears are strictly protected by EU directives and their killing is allowed only in exceptional cases, such as public security threats and when there are no alternatives.

Bear meat is not eaten often in Europe and is considered delicacy only in several regions, such as parts of Eastern Europe and Nordic countries.

In most EU member states, the strict rules of hunting and protected bear status mean that meat is rarely available.

When it is, it is usually a result of a licensed money and is not common in restaurants or stores.

Experts warn at the risk of trichinel – a parasite that can cause serious diseases in humans.

The European Union’s regulation on food safety requires the bear meat testing to Larva Trihinel before releasing in sales.

The American Center for Disease Control and Prevention prescribes an internal cooking temperature of at least 70 degrees Celsius to kill a parasite.

Freezing, smoking or drying of meat does not make it safe.
