You don’t discover it right away. You just take the glass out of the dishwasher and put it on the table. But then the look hits the right light and you see it: the foggy, milky white coating that makes your fine crystal glass smaller crystal and more municipal canteen. Glass plague has announced its arrival – and no, it’s not something that goes over with a little extra rinse.
We love our dishwasher. It eats plates and cutlery like a hungry wolf and spits out again, clean and dry. But it also has a back, especially if you have a weakness for neat glass.
According to Knowledge Center Bolius Namely, the mysterious glass plague is not due to sloppy or poor soap – but a chemical reaction that originates from the glass itself.
Pest without cure
It sounds dramatic, and so is it – especially because there is no cure. Glass plague is not just surface pig. It is silicic acid that is released when the temperature of the machine exceeds 60-65 degrees. The acid originates from the material itself in the glass itself and forms a foggy membrane that refuses to disappear, no matter how many times you try with extra rinse or expensive shiny.

You can try the vinegar test if you still hope. Rub a glass with a vinegar cloth. Is it clear? Then it was lime. Does it become mat? Then you have glass plague and then it’s just about considering retiring the glass for the « water bowl for the cat » department.
How to avoid the glass disaster
However, there is hope ahead – at least preventative. Bolius recommends that you choose dishes that do not exceed 55 degrees. And then you have to be quick on the trigger when the machine is done: Open it immediately after the last rinse so that the steam does not settle and hurts. Even better? Wipe off the jars by hand. Yes, it’s cumbersome. But do you really want to lose your collection of French wine glasses to something that sounds like a medieval illness?
Last bonus info: Do not use vinegar with sugar if you want to remove coatings. Sugar on the glass doesn’t do anything better. It just makes the glass sticky and even less useful for the guests’ Riesling.
So if you are the type serving water in crystal and refuses to use Ikea glass for anything other than toothbrushes-remember to keep the temperature low and maybe consider whether your most beloved glasses should have a luxury treatment in the washbasin instead.
